Methods of use
Essential oils are used both internally and externally. At Essentics, we currently are working only with external applications of essential oils.
For external application, there are two routes into the bloodstream: through the skin in a topical application, or through the lungs as an inhalation. A bath is a good combination of both routes.
1. Inhalation:
Diffusers/nebulizers: For a
diffuser that uses a heat source, float
several drops of essential oil on top of water in the diffuser receptacle.
Never burn essential oils directly on the receptacle.
There are some diffusers that create an air stream across
an oil-saturated pad. These have no heated elements and are very safe to use.
Nebulizers create a fine mist with the
essential oil, and can allow for more control over the concentration of the
diffusion. Most have glass parts. For nebulizers,
follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Steam: Add 2 drops of essential oil to a small bowl of hot water. Place a towel over your head and inhale the steam for 10 minutes. Remember to close your eyes, as essential oil droplets can damage the cornea. Also, see baths below.
Other
no-tech options:
Sprinkle a
few drops of undiluted essential oils on your pillow. Caution: oils with a
strong color may stain your pillowcase.
Sprinkle undiluted oil drops on a tissue. Wrap it in plastic wrap to keep the oils from evaporating quickly. Take it with you in the car, your shirt pocket or purse and inhale as needed throughout the day.
AVOID INHALING UNDILUTED OIL DIRECTLY FROM THE BOTTLE REGULARLY. It is very strong and often leads to headaches. Also, uncapping the bottle frequently will oxidize (decay) your oil.
2. Topical
application
Rub or massage: Many of
our mixes are designed to be rubbed onto the skin. Rub in well two to four
times daily for best results. Applying heat will often improve
absorption. This can be particularly effective for respiratory
conditions. Make sure you wash your hands after applying the oils!
Baths: Most essential oils are not dispersible in water. Use 4 -6 drops essential oil in a tub of water. Either put oil in a disperse agent such as 1/4 cup whole milk (vodka also works), or vigorously agitate the water after filling the tub and adding the 4 - 6 drops of oil. Essential oils can damage the cornea, so avoid any contact with the eyes.
Compress: Add 2 - 5 drops essential oil to 2/3 cup warm water. Agitate to disperse. Soak a cotton cloth, wring out, and lay on affected area. Additional heat and wrapping the area with plastic wrap both aid absorption.
3. A note on dilutions
Our mixes are diluted 3 - 10%.
3% is the standard of practice for massage mixes, when the whole body is being
rubbed with the mix. A higher dilution is more appropriate when the mix is
applied to a small area of the body, like the chest and neck. All
dilutions are well within safety limits for the specific oils used. See
"contraindications" in each mix profile for special precautions.
