Effect on smooth muscle

Summary:  This study investigated the effects of the essential oils of 22 plants on tracheal (throat) and ileal (intestinal) smooth muscle.
Angelica root produced a relaxant effect on the tracheal smooth muscle of the guinea pig.

Effect on genetic mutation

Summary: The essential oil of Angelica archangelica was studied for its effect on genetic mutation of bone marrow cells. The results
support the inhibition of genetic mutation by Angelica archangelica.

Salikhova RA, Dulatova ShN, Poroshenko GG (1993).  Study of the antimutagenic properties of Angelica archangelica by the micronucleus test.  Biull Eksp Biol Med,  115(4):371-2.

Summary:  This study supports the inhibition of genetic mutation by Angelica archangelica.  It also found that Angelica extracts showed
no genetic toxicity.
