Essential oil
of Sweet Marjoram
(Origanum marjorana)
A bushy perennial with knot-like flower clusters and small oval leaves. The essential oil is steam distilled from the dried, flowering plant. This is a different herb from oregano (Origanum vulgare), with different properties. Though used extensively in folk medicine, there is little research on sweet marjoram.
May relieve muscle and nerve pain: this is a common use for the essential oil in Europe and England.
Potential anti-viral agent: in a test tube, liquid extracts of sweet marjoram inhibited the growth of Herpes simplex. More studies need to be done.
May relieve sleeplessness: this is a common use for the essential oil in Europe and England.
Contraindications
