A small tree or large bush with slender branches and sharp-pointed leaves. The white flowers and leaves are fragrant. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs. This is a different plant from calamus, which is known as "sweet myrtle".
Aids respiratory system: acts to thin mucus secretions, so is useful as an expectorant. Aids nasal drainage and calms bronchial spasms. Large clinical trials have focused on uses for both bronchitis and sinusitis. Approved by the German E Commission as a cough remedy, it is one the most popular herbal medicines in that country.
Supports immune system: used by physicians in France to help stimulate immune function.
Uses in cancer therapy: recent research is exploring the use of myrtle and other oils in enhancing the absorption of chemotherapy through the skin.
Contraindications
Can be a mild skin irritant. Essential oil of myrtle is often
adulterated.
