A small tree with whitish-grey bark and branches that end in spines. When the bark is cut, a resinoid is produced. The essential oil is steam distilled from the resinoid.
Reduces inflammation and pain: Approved by the German E Commission for mild inflammations of the mouth and throat, including canker sores and other oral lesions, pain and inflammation from gum infections, and discomfort associated with oral candida (yeast). Myrrh is also used as a gargle for soothing sore throat and tonsillitis pain. Myrrh occurs in commercial mouthwashes and gargles in various parts of the world.
Decreases risk of infection: Has astringent (binding) and antibacterial effects. Myrrh has been used for at least 2,000 years for wound care. Also useful for hemorrhoids and bedsores.
Immune system support: Myrrh is used in practice for immune system support, though there is little scientific research to support this usage.
Other: Recent research has focused on the internal use of myrrh for reduction of cancerous tumors, protection against gastric ulcers, elimination of blood clots, and reduction of blood sugar in diabetes.
Contraindications
Avoid in pregnancy. There is some evidence that myrrh may bring on menstruation.
