A small tree or shrub with pink or white flowers. When the bark is cut, a milky white oleo gum resin is formed. The essential oil is steam distilled from this resin.
Effects on inflammation: There has been extensive research on the anti-inflammatory effects of boswellic acids, a major component of frankincense, the mechanisms of action biochemically, and its uses in medicine. Uses for respiratory problems, joint problems and inflammatory bowel diseases have been researched.
May help to drain nasal congestion: Used historically across cultures for chesty coughs and asthma.
Helps induce a meditative state: Frankincense has long been used in religious rituals in numerous Eastern and Western faiths.
May support tissue healing: Classically used for care of wounds, leg ulcers, scars, and wrinkles.
Immunostimulant: There is some preliminary evidence to support this.
