A tall evergreen tree with bluish-green oval leaves and smooth grey bark. There are over 700 species of eucalyptus. The essential oil is distilled from the fresh or partially dried leaves and twigs.
Effects on respiratory system: widely used in over-the-counter brands like Vicks vapor rub. Eucalyptus oil is approved by the German E Commission as an expectorant and antispasmodic.
Anti-microbial actions: useful for cleaning wounds and healing skin ulcers. Hospitals in Europe and the U.S. used eucalyptus oil to sterilize catheters and surgical equipment.
Effects on inflammation: good for sore muscles and joints. Approved by the German E Commission for rheumatic complaints. Also useful as a gargle for sore throats.
Contraindications
Avoid if you are pregnant. Do not use with children under the
age of 2. Do not take internally unless under the guidance of a trained health
professional.
Eucalyptus oil induces the enzyme system of the liver involved in the detoxification process. Therefore, the effects of other drugs can be weakened and/or shortened.
