A tall, conical-shaped evergreen tree with round cones. The essential
oil is steam-distilled from the young twigs and needles.
The therapeutic uses of cypress essential oil are largely
practice-based. There is very little medically-oriented research on
this oil.
Reduces coughing spasms: Cypress is recognized across cultures as being effective for reducing spasms that occur in whooping cough and dry coughing fits in general. Used widely for general bronchial complaints. Unfortunately, there is little published research that addresses this use for cypress. However, it is used by medical doctors in Western Europe for whooping cough and dry cough.
Constricts blood vessels/astringent: Useful to help prevent the spread of varicose veins, relief of hemorrhoids, sweaty feet, and other problems where an astringent would be helpful.
Inhibits giardia: There are several studies that support the potent inhibitory effect of cypress essential oil against this intestinal parasite.
Contraindications
