A slender evergreen tree with large bright green leaves. The buds are dried and steam distilled. Essential oils are also produced from the leaf and stem. These oils are generally not used for therapeutic purposes.
Anti-microbial uses: effective against a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and larva. Listed by the German E Commission as antiseptic (reduces bacteria), antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral.
Effects on pain: approved by the German E Commission to relieve inflammations of the mouth and throat, and to numb pain. Also used on the skin for insect bites, abrasions, and other irritations. See contraindications below.
Soothes stomach upset: has been used historically for indigestion, gas, and bloating.
Contraindications
Clove bud oil can cause skin irritation and allergic
sensitivity when used in high concentration. The safety record is excellent
when used in proper dilution (under 5%) on the skin, or under 1% in the mouth.
