Clary sage is a biennial herb with small blue flowers and large, hairy leaves. It is similar to common sage, but safer to use in aromatherapy. The essential oil is taken from the flowering tops and leaves via steam distillation. The principal chemical constituent is linalyl acetate, an ester, which accounts for clary's calming properties. Sclareol is also an important constituent and is the focus of current research. Historically, clary sage has been added to beer and Muscatel wine to increase their potency.
General sedative: promotes a calming effect to the nervous system.
Relief of muscle spasms: Used historically for this purpose. There is also evidence that sclareol, a chemical component of clary sage, will delay a convulsion.
Hormonal support (estrogen): Common in women's health for symptomatic relief of menopausal symptoms, to aid in starting delayed menstruation, and general hormonal support.
Contraindications
Because of its estrogen-like action, clary sage may indirectly support tumor
growth. Until further research is done, avoid if you have a history of tumors
or cancer.
Do not take with alcohol, as it can exaggerate intoxication.
Do not confuse with other sage oils, as they can be quite
different chemically and much less safe.
